Built into a ravine along a natural stream, the hallmark of this project is planning, architecture and interior design completely synchronized with extraordinary preservation of the wooded site. The design vocabulary creates rich dialogue, continuity, and detail integrating the architecture with its interior environment.
The United Parcel Service wished to create a facility in harmony with its heavily wooded site. The height of the office was limited to seven stories in order to keep below the tree canopy. A fifteen foot perimeter was maintained around the buildings where no trees were removed. Energy savings in the lighting were realized through external sunscreens maximizing daylight harvesting. A mechanical system with energy recovery heat exchangers was utilized to further reduce energy consumption.
Other environmentally sensitive solutions include: Premium indoor air quality via increased constant outside air volume; Specification of low VOC materials; Use of wood from renewable forests; Disturbed areas replanted with indigenous plant material to decrease need for water intensive landscape.
